Lenny Del Genio – NBA Playoff Betting Update

05/03/2011

If NBA bettors were expecting favorites to turn things around in the 2nd Round of the NBA Playoffs, then they are still waiting following the conclusion of a quartet of Game One’s.

Not only did three underdogs cash in the four Game One’s, but they all won outright. The only Game 1 favorite to cover the pointspread was the Miami Heat, who all of a sudden look like the best team in basketball. After all this, could the Heat actually win the NBA Finals?

Underdogs went 26-16-1 ATS in the first round of the playoffs. There were no first round series where the favorite showed a profit, although three of the eight saw an even 3-3 ATS split. Those series were: Memphis/San Antonio (surprising considering an 8 seed beat a 1 seed in 6 games), Dallas/Portland and LA Lakers/New Orleans. Note that’s including the Spurs/Grizzlies Game 5 as a ½ point cover for San Antonio.

So, after 47 total playoff games, underdogs are now 29-17-1 ATS, which is pretty dominant. Just about all of the betting lines for Game 2 of the four respective series are similar to what we saw in Game 1, so the question now is this the time to change course with your NBA picks?

Under bettors really cleaned up in the first round of the playoffs as well, particularly the second weekend where all eight games went Under the total. Mirroring the underdogs’ record, Under bettors went 26-17 in Round 1 with only the Memphis/San Antonio series seeing more Overs (four) cash than Unders (two).

Again, it was the Atlanta/Orlando series that was the real outlier here. In five of the six games, the Under cashed. Underdogs were also 5-1 ATS in that series.

It appears as if the tide may be turning here, however. All four second round Game 1’s went Over the total and Game 2’s have a history of going Over. As a matter of fact, all Playoff Game 2’s, and we’re talking any round, have gone Over 59% of the time the last five years.

Why is no one talking about the fact that the Dallas Mavericks have now covered 11 straight games?

NBA Blog – Worst ATS Teams

01/21/2011

Believe it or not, but we have essentially reached the halfway point in the season for NBA betting.

Below you will find a report to assist you in making NBA picks from now until the playoffs begin in April. What we have done is uncover the teams with the best and worst pointspread records in the NBA.

The teams with the worst pointspread records in the NBA (through January 21st) are as follows: 1. Cavs (13-26-1 ATS), 2. Kings (14-25-1 ATS), 3. Wizards (15-23-1 ATS), 4. Suns (16-23-1 ATS).

What’s interesting to note here is that the three worst teams all currently reside in last place of their respective divisions. In fact, Cleveland and Sacramento also own the two worst straight up records in the league.

Cleveland is absolutely atrocious. Entering Friday, January 21st, they have lost 24 of 25 games and are just 5-20 ATS in those games. They have not won a game in regulation since November! They’ve already lost a game by 55 points to the LA Lakers and one has to wonder what the line would be if they played the likes of LA or Miami again? Could we see a 20-point line this season in the NBA? Possibly. On a recent road trip, the Cavs were a double digit dog five teams and failed to cover the spread four times. They are just 2-4 ATS when getting 13 or more points this season. They have, by far, the worst point differential in the league at -11.3 PPG, which is five points worse than any other team!

Sacramento has inched past Cleveland to get out of the league’s ‘ATS basement’ by virtue of a recent 6-2 ATS run. This despite they are just 2-6 SU in those games, so there could be value in going against them as the lines may start to shrink.

Washington’s problem is road games. They are actually a winning proposition at home. However, they are 0-20 SU and 5-15 ATS outside the Verizon Center losing those games by an average of 12 PPG.

Phoenix has been a disappointment and their average line is a pick em. Since they are sliding down the pecking order in the Western Conference, they’ll be a dog more often than not down the stretch.

NBA Blog – Best ATS Teams

01/21/2011

Believe it or not, but we have essentially reached the halfway point in the season for NBA betting.

Below you will find a report to assist you in making NBA picks from now until the playoffs begin in April. What we have done is uncover the teams with the best and worst pointspread records in the NBA.

The teams with the best pointspread records in the NBA (through January 21st) are as follows: 1. Sixers (26-15-1 ATS), 2. Knicks (25-15-1 ATS), 3. Grizzlies (25-16-1 ATS), 4. Bulls (25-18 ATS), 5. Spurs (24-17-1 ATS).

The Sixers are obviously a huge surprise. The team started 3-13 SU for 1st year HC Doug Collins, but since that time have posted a winning record at 14-12 SU. They are usually an underdog with the average line coming in at around +3 and due to a losing overall record, the team will continue to be getting points in most games this season.

The biggest reason for the success of the Knicks at the betting window has been their 16-5 ATS record as an underdog. Unlike Philadelphia, New York has a winning record and because of that they won’t be getting points more often than not any longer. The average line in Knicks games thus far has been +1.

The Grizzlies are another surprising team. The average line in their games is also right around +1. One of the best situations to bet Memphis this season has been when coming off a road game (16-4 ATS).

The Bulls, unlike the first three teams we’ve mentioned, are usually a favorite with their average line at -3. They’ve been pretty hot of late, so keep in mind that this was essentially a 50/50 proposition at the betting window before the New Year.

What’s most impressive about the Spurs is that only the Heat and Lakers have a higher average line among all NBA teams. The average line in San Antonio games is -6. This means you can expect even higher lines as the Spurs are currently on pace for 70 wins!
